Recently, I was told by the Vice President for HR at a major university hospital to develop a curriculum for employee engagement. We have never before had anything dealing with employee engagement. This book is one of seven that I researched and bought to bring myself up to speed on the concept. Carrots and Sticks Don't Work is by far the best and most practical book of the seven. Dr. Marciano shares his vast knowledge and experience on the topic. Well organized, nicely written, good stories, practical applications, research-based yet accessible.

This book literally saved us from letting our entrepreneurial fear destroy the morale of our loyal and hardworking team! I'm so grateful I was reading the section on Expectation and Goal-Setting Fundamentals just a few hours before a hard conversation my husband and I were scheduled to have with our team that would have been unnecessarily destructive. This booked is packed with practical action items and clear insight on elevating your leadership. It is an excellent and handy resource!

FINALLY a book that talks about motivation and engagement that is backed up with literal evidence! This is the first business book I've picked up in years that I couldn't put down! I was personally engaged myself! Not only does it give a clearly defined roadmap for evaluating yourself as a leader, it describes how we, as leaders are often the reason our teams (employees) fail or are not engaged. What a truly eye opening book on how to effectively evaluate your current management style, but also how to improve your bottom line - which if manager and owners are being honest, that's what it all comes down to. Oddly enough, and moreover, refreshing, is that it has little to do with spending dollars on incentive programs that always fizzle out over time where you find you and your team right back where you were when you started the whole thing. This is a must read for anyone who's role includes managing people. It's a win-win for all!

What a simple concept-respect! The putting it into practice-not so simple yet this book breaks it down for you and highlights practices that can be adapted for virtually any industry. The self assessments were truly eye opening and pointed out to me where I needed to do serious work to make my relationships with employees stronger. I think this book should be required reading for all!

This book is a great resource for team leaders, managers, directors and CEOs. I found the RESPECT model they propose insightful and immediately useful to gain engagement, loyalty and trust. There are simple diagnostics tools and great examples that helped me see where I was and how I can improve and make positive changes. I am using it, and recommending my staff and team to read it.

I LOVE this book! I read it THREE times, and refer back to it often. It is EXACTLY the resource you need, whether you are a long-time manager, or a brand-new manager. If you want to throw out the title of 'manager' and become a true leader, mentor, and coach, this is the philosophy that will get you there! Managing people, in a traditional way, just does not empower them to take on work that is satisfying. Leading a team is exciting for you, the supervisor, and for your team because, finally, here is someone who is saying, "I know you have more to offer and more capabilities than former 'managers' have realized about you! If your team is proud of their mission, and "owns" responsibility for the success of the company, they will work extra hard and be very engaged. I learned from this book, and it is absolutely practical! This author speaks from educational knowledge of analysis of behavior, and from much diverse experience. The bottom line; this really works and this is a fantastic resource! Don't be without it because I find this book vital to success as a team leader.

Carrots and Sticks Don't Work is a great book. It is the perfect resource, whether you are a long-time manager, or brand-new to leadership. Keep it handy so you can pick a strategy at random to practice each day. If you do, it will propel you and organization to the next level. Not only will I be recommending this book to my clients, I gave it to my wife who works in HR at a large international company. RESPECT, find out what it can do for you!

Respect for people is really the key for better employee engagement. The author selected an acronym that contained 7 key elements which correspond directly to RESPECT. This is not only easy for people to remember yet each element contain actionable philosophy that we can learn and apply immediately.
